Mailprotector, a pioneer in zero-trust email security, won the “Best Pitch” award at Channel Engage’s October 2024 live stream event. CEO David Setzer reframed email security as a fundamental permissions challenge rather than just a scanning problem.

From Communication Tool to Security Threat: The Email Evolution Problem

Referencing the 2024 Verizon Data Breach Report, Setzer highlighted how email – a revolutionary communication tool on par with the printing press – has become a primary security concern, with 90% of cyberattacks now beginning through email. “What happened is this awesome tool became a chore that we had to manage or a threat that we had to fear instead of this great communication tool,” Setzer explained.

Understanding the Core Problem: ARPANET to Internet

During his winning presentation, Setzer traced email’s security challenges to its origins: “Email wasn’t created for the Internet. The SMTP protocol was created for ARPANET, where you had to have permission to get on the network. You had to be vetted and verified.” As the network evolved into today’s open Internet, the protocol remained unchanged, creating what Setzer defines as “a permissions problem, not a scanning problem.”

Shield: First Zero Trust Email Security Solution

Mailprotector demonstrated their innovative Shield solution, which applies zero trust principles to email security through:

  • Dynamic HUD banners that adjust to current threat conditions
  • X-ray feature for safe analysis of suspicious content
  • Built-in security training with neutered threat examples
  • Privacy capabilities including burner addresses
  • Locked sensitive data protection within inboxes
  • And so much more…

“Since we’ve deployed Shield internally, I haven’t received a threat to my inbox – no phishing, ransomware, or malware – in a year,” shared Setzer. “What used to take 30 to 40 minutes a day managing email now takes about 5 minutes a week.”

Channel Engage Recognition

The “Best Pitch” award reflects direct feedback from attending MSPs who evaluate vendors based on:

  1. Solution innovation
  2. Channel program strength
  3. MSP business growth potential
  4. Technical capabilities
  5. Partner support infrastructure

Andy Larin, a Mailprotector Partner Advisory Council member with an MSP in Canada, described Shield as “game changing” after early access to the solution.
