You Deployed Email Encryption. Nobody's Using It.
Bracket·Video·8 min watch
Most email encryption does not fail at deployment. It fails three weeks later, when the people who are supposed to use it quietly stop.
Cody Ekle ran his own MSP before joining Mailprotector®, and he has spent about seven years focused on email security. In this talk, he walks through why encryption gets rolled out for compliance and then abandoned, and what it takes to build encryption people don’t hate to use.
The pattern is familiar to any MSP. A client needs encryption to stay compliant, so you deploy a product. It needs a plugin that goes out of date. Or it forces every recipient to create an account and remember another password. The steps pile up until someone decides it is easier to send a normal email, so they do. Then the support tickets start: password resets, lockouts, and setup help for recipients who are not even paying you. Eventually, users give up, and the sensitive data goes out unprotected anyway.
For years, the industry treated this like a trade-off. Encryption could be easy, which usually meant plain TLS that did not meet standards, or secure enough to be a hassle, which meant nobody wanted to touch it. Security or simplicity. Pick one.
Cody explains how Mailprotector spent six years trying to find an encryption product that escaped that trade-off before its CTO decided to build one. Bracket came out of that. To encrypt a message, you wrap the subject line in brackets and send. Bracket intercepts the message in transit and encrypts it automatically with AES-256. No plugin, no app, and no password for the recipient. They get a secure sign-in link, click once, and land in a clean inbox they already know how to use.
In the talk, Cody also covers how Bracket stays secure without passwords and how Bracket Share handles the secure file transfer that makes up most of what people send. He also explains how encryption went from a compliance checkbox for a few regulated industries to something a business handling credit card numbers needs just as much.
